We all have a bad day at the office every now and then. But when a bad day turns into a bad week, a bad month, or even a bad year, it’s time to reflect on whether your current role is right for you.
Quitting your job is not a decision to make lightly, which is why it’s important to consider your options with a clear head. If you are experiencing one or more of the following signs, it’s a good indication that the time has come to look for new opportunities.
- You’re not growing in your role.
If your employer is failing to invest in your ongoing learning, or there are few opportunities for progression, it’s time to consider looking elsewhere. Being stuck in a role that doesn’t stretch you or fully utilise your skills becomes incredibly demotivating, very quickly.
- You’re bored most of the time.
If you’re spending more time daydreaming or scanning YouTube for cat videos that getting down to your tasks at work, it’s time to consider if your role is really a good fit for you. In order to feel motivated, there needs to be something about your job that engages you.
- You dread going to work.
Do you go to bed every night dreading the next day at work? Do you spend your Sundays worrying about the working week to come? It’s normal to feel the Monday blues, but when the thought of work starts to interfere with your personal life it’s a good indication that something isn’t right.
- You feel anxious, stressed and exhausted all the time.
When your job starts to take a toll on your physical or mental wellbeing, it might be a sign that you’re close to burnout. If you’re drinking to destress, taking more sick days than usual, or missing out on sleep, it’s time to think about whether your job is worth compromising your health.
- Your work environment is toxic.
If everyone around you is unhappy and hostile, it’s likely that the work environment has turned toxic. To turn this around requires action from the top – something that you likely have little control over. If you find yourself on a sinking ship of negativity, it might be time to get out before it drags you down with it.
- The company culture isn’t a good fit for you.
If you care about flexibility but work for a business that doesn’t trust its employees to work from home, or you’re an introvert working for a company that always listens the loudest voice, you are unlikely to find satisfaction in your work no matter how hard to try. Consider the conditions and values that are non-negotiable to you, and find an employer who agrees.
- Your work feels meaningless.
If you don’t feel you are contributing anything of value to the world, or even feel your job or company is actively damaging in some way, it’s going to be tough to fully engage in your work. It’s simply impossible to succeed at something that deep down you are opposed to.
- Your gut tells you it’s time to move on.
Sometimes, you just need to trust your instincts. If you know deep down that your job isn’t working for you, it’s going to be hard to silence that inner voice without taking action. If you truly feel that quitting is the right thing to do, then maybe it’s time to listen to your gut.
Each of these signs indicates that your current role isn’t serving you well. But if you’ve decided that the time has come to move on, it’s also important to consider what you do want from a job instead of focused solely on what you don’t want.
Reflect on the values that drive you, the type of environment where you want to spend your time, and the sort of work that excites you. Use these factors as a filter for new opportunities. Try not to rush into any old thing that crops up just to escape from where you are now – take the time to find the right match for you.
