Career Guide for Singapore Undergraduates Wishing to Study Law in the US or UK

When it comes to graduate studies, the US and the UK have some of the world’s most renowned universities in terms of the quality of education they afford.

Few universities come close to the academic excellence which these educational institutions can offer and as an undergraduate student in Singapore, you may be looking to study for a career in law by gaining acceptance into one of these schools.

However, is a degree in law from the United States or United Kingdom accepted by the Ministry of Law in Singapore? The answer to that is both simple and complex, as is the law itself.

The Rule of Law Modelled after the UK

When seeking to understand the laws of a nation, it is necessary to understand whether or not there is an older legal system those laws may be modelled after.

In the case of Singapore, the legal system is based on the much, much older system as established by Great Britain centuries ago.

Because of this, there are certain schools of law within the UK that are acceptable to the Ministry of Law in Singapore and from which a graduate could seek to apply for a license to practice law in their home country.

In much the same way as the legal system in Singapore is modelled after that of the UK, so, too, is that in the United States. Both Singapore and the United States have a legal system that owes a debt of gratitude to that of the UK, and it is possible to see the similarities in their respective legal code and rule of law.

Because of this, a Singapore undergraduate might be interested in earning a law degree from institutions that are well respected and have earned global renown.

Both countries have law schools that are so well respected that students from around the world vie for acceptance and few make the grade.

How to Gain Acceptance in to Schools of This Calibre

Before even looking at schools of law in either London or the United States, it is important to impress upon you just how rigid the entrance requirements are to these schools.

Not only do you need to prove an exemplary career as an undergraduate, the cost of that education without a fellowship would be extremely high.

A graduate of any of the following schools of law can hold their heads up high, knowing they have achieved something sought after by many but realised by few.

The best advice you can be given is to start preparing for entry even before entering an undergraduate college.

Such things as grade point averages, attendance, extracurricular activities, honour societies and other accomplishments will matter a great deal as will recommendations from professors and esteemed members of the community.

United States Schools of Law Recognized by the Singapore Ministry of Law

Soon you will see that there are several more schools in the United Kingdom recognised by the Ministry of Law than those being accepted in the United States.

This only stands to reason as, like Singapore, the United States bases its legal system on that of the UK. Schools in the United Kingdom that are accepted include:

  1. University of Birmingham
  2. London School of Economics and Political Science
  3. University of Bristol
  4. University of Nottingham
  5. University of Cambridge
  6. King’s College, London
  7. Queen Mary and Westfield College
  8. University of Warwick
  9. University of Oxford
  10. University of Durham
  11. University College, London

Of these 11 schools of law in the UK, you probably most recognize Cambridge, King’s College in London, the University of London and Oxford University because they are so widely acclaimed around the world.

Even so, these schools all offer a superior education or they would not be recognised by the Ministry of Law.

The Four Widely Renowned Schools of Law in the United States

No matter where you go in the world, you will hear of graduates from these United States schools of law winning major battles in court. Few schools can surpass the mark of excellence achieved by:

  1. Harvard University
  2. Columbia University
  3. University of Michigan
  4. New York University

And, of course, the most widely renowned school of law in the United States would be Harvard University of which famous graduates include:

  • Former First Lady, Michelle Obama
  • Governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney
  • Supreme Court Justice, Elena Kagan
  • US President (the first to be a Harvard graduate) Rutherford B. Hayes

And the list could go on and on.

Being such a coveted law school, serious students would give anything they had to gain acceptance.

The prestige of being a Harvard graduate alone is enough to gain a foothold into some of the world’s leading legal firms.

While there are top-notch law schools in Singapore an undergraduate could apply to, these 15 universities based in the UK and the US are widely known and well-respected around the globe.

Besides earning a well-respected law degree, students get to experience a bit of the world abroad.

Any further questions about international schools of law accepted by the Ministry of Law can be addressed on their website.

However, in the end, these schools are every pre-law student’s dream and enough to keep them studying around the clock just for that chance they will be accepted.

With a degree from any of these schools you can brand yourself as an expert in the field of law and that is your entry into some of the world’s leading legal firms.
